Mount Kisco has been both a village and a town in Westchester County, New York. The village was incorporated in 1875 as a part of two towns, Bedford and New Castle. However, in 1978, the village opted to become its own town and a completely separate entity from these areas.
The town is often referred to as the commercial hub of Westchester County, and, being in the central part of the county, many residents travel to the town for its variety of shopping centers. In fact, on key shopping days, it is believed that the town’s estimated population of just under 10,000 doubles. One problem that Mount Kisco currently faces is increasing automobile traffic. This is due to the fact that new shopping locations are popping up all over the place, increasing the draw to the town, as well as the fact that many of the surrounding towns and villages are developing quickly. Also, many businesses are suffering and trying to move out of Mount Kisco due to increasing market values and raised rents that are no longer affordable.
However, the area is full of mainly upper-middle class neighborhoods, and the average family brings in a median income just below $70,000. Several celebrities have at one time made their home in Mount Kisco, and rapper DMX currently resides in the town.
