Mount Pleasant is a town in Westchester County, New York, that has a little bit of everything to offer. The history behind the town is rich, as it includes the village of Sleepy Hollow, the basis for Washington Irving’s famous book, as well as Pocantico Hills, the famous home to four generations of Rockefellers.
The secluded Kykuit estate was built by John D. Rockefeller back in 1913 and is now a National Trust Historic Site, with the 3,000 acres making up part of the Rockefeller State Preserve. Actually, about 80 acres of the former estate that were once used as a cattle ranch are currently being turned into an educational center and restaurant.
In all honesty, the village of Sleepy Hollow was actually called North Tarrytown until 1996. It was at this time that the General Motors plant, located on the river, closed down, and the area needed to find a new way to support itself. It turned to the idea of tourism, and the town of Mount Pleasant is currently in the process of developing a plan for the construction of a large residential project with over 1,500 units, as well as 150,000 square feet of retail space, a 150-room hotel, and commercial office space along the river.
