North Salem, a town in Westchester County, New York, is labeled as one of the most beautiful areas within the New York City metropolis. This underdeveloped gem (with a population barely over 5,000, according to the 2000 Census) is currently being affected by zoning changes, however, with rapid growth causing the planning of new homes and sub-divisions that could wipe out the open fields and rolling hills that make the town such a lovely center for horseback riding.
Up to now, raising horses for hunting and jumping has been quite popular in the area. There are also several historical locations that tourists may find of interest, such as the DeLancey Town Hall. Restored to its 18th century Georgian style beauty, this manor is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Visitors might also enjoy the Japanese Stroll Garden.
For those who like to “star gaze”, several celebrities have made or currently make North Salem their home, including late-night television host David Letterman, actor Bill Murray, and the late Lucille Ball. Yet another affluent area of Westchester County, one can expect to pay a pretty penny to reside here. In the year 2000, the median household income topped $100,000.
