Though Scarsdale is considered to be a town in Westchester County, New York, they choose to operate their government as a village. Scarsdale is by far considered the most affluent area of Westchester County, with a median household income topping $200,000. In fact in a 2002 article in Forbes Magazine referring to zip codes where the median sale price of a home was over $500,000, Scarsdale ranked number 71 (using the zip code 10583), with a median price of $717,500.
Scarsdale is also a well known area nationwide, due to several famous residents (including Yoko Ono, widow of John Lennon), as well as several mentions of the town in movies and television (Seinfeld, Friends, the musical Rent, and even the French children’s book series Babar the Elephant, to name a few). Another claim to fame is the Scarsdale Diet, made popular by Dr. Herman Tarnower in his book The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet in 1979. The diet was based on the idea of eating lower amounts of carbohydrates and higher amounts of protein (a diet still popular today), and the book hit the best seller’s list.
Scarsdale is a much desired place of residence but highly expensive and difficult for most to afford. However, a drive through the town will offer great shopping locations and an occasion to gawk at some of the largest, most elegant homes in Westchester County.
